MORE BROOKHART STUFF
Miss Rosina Mucci, a young stenographer in the United States commissioner’s office at Newark, dines with two supposed human beings who later turn out to be dry agents., The dinner occurs in a Newark speakeasy.

Months later, the two dry agents tell their boss about the dinner. The girl fears her “in-discretion” will embarrass her boss, the commissioner, and rather than bring him face, to face with an awkward situation, she resigns.

Just what was Miss Mucci’s indiscretion?

The eighteenth amendment does not make it a crime to buy liquor or drink liquor or enter a place where liquor is sold. Neither does the Volstead act. The United States Supreme court has held that neither the buying nor the drinking of liquor is illegal.

Yet Miss Mucci suffers the penalty of loss of her job- a serious penalty, in these times- for having done something that is not a crime.
The whole episode has a rich, mellow frameup odor.

When such a deal can be put over, it is proper to ask what kind of country the dry laws are turning this into.
